Room 13's Amazing Learning!

WELCOME TO ROOM 13

We have been learning a lot of interesting things this term!

We were fortunate enough to have tennis and hockey coaches come through to teach us how to play both sports and learn new skills. Our lessons were every Wednesday for five weeks. 

Part of our inquiry learning this term focused around Animals and Easter. Room 13 read a book about Alley Cats. We enjoyed learning about the use of verbs in this book.

Our art focus this term was to use crayon and dye in our artwork. Here are examples of our artwork!

Below we have examples of our artwork based on Easter. We learnt about the importance of Easter before our Easter holiday. Each student designed their own Easter egg and cross patterns using crayon and dye. All designs were inspired by cultural patterns.

Easter Masterpiece!

In Room 21 we enjoyed learning about the significance of Easter. We chose special symbols from the Easter story to create our visual art projects this term.

My cross represents Jesus and how he died for us and my heart shows how much I love Jesus. 

Narosah

My cross represents how Jesus sacrificed everything for us and died on the cross. Easter is important to me because I like spending time with my family. 

John-Paul

My Easter symbol is of the tomb and represents Jesus being resurrected. Easter is when our families get together to celebrate how Jesus sacrificed himself for us. 

Christina

I chose the tomb where Jesus was taken by Joseph. Easter is important to me because it’s a time for us to celebrate how Jesus helped us and died for our sins. 

Joshua

Easter is about how Jesus died for our sins. My art shows how Jesus looks after us every day. 

Christine

I adore and respect Jesus, my Lord because he has given us the chance for new beginnings. My symbol represents Palm Sunday and the start of Easter celebrations. 

Fiafia 2015

FIAFIA 2015

Dance is the hidden language of the soul and Yendarra School has recently experienced the love that can be shared through cultural song and dance.

This year we celebrated everything ‘grand’ at Yendarra by hosting our Fiafia event at the Otara Leisure Centre with an amazing number of special guests, families and musicians.

Our children were the super stars and shining stars that ignited a flame that would light up the hearts of many for a long time and this is their story….

On Wednesday 9th December 2015 from 12noon the senior students and teachers prepared Fiafia day at the Otara Rec Centre to celebrate the year and fill people’s hearts with happiness. I felt very proud of everyone who attended the Fiafia day. By: Nora

I really enjoyed performing at Fiafia because I liked representing my dad’s culture – Cook Island. I had fun making people smile and I enjoyed the opportunity to talk in front of a massive crowd. I hope the next generation of us make Fiafia even better than this year so all our parents and special guest feel happy to watch Yendarra perform again!. By: Shalah-Maye

What a year it has been!

Thank you whanau for all the support you have given to us during this year. Every year our sense of whanau grows stronger and we appreciate your continued piripono (loyalty) to our school.

Unless our children are moving onto intermediate next year, we hope to see all of our children back at Yendarra in 2016. We have already started planning two big school trips, the first to the Auckland Zoo and the second is to the Rocky Shore as well as many exciting visitors, shows and trips throughout the year.

To show our appreciation of your piripono (loyalty) all children who are back at Yendarra School by 19 February as well as any new children, will receive their stationary and a sun hat FREE. That is a saving of $35 per child!

We hope you have a peaceful, love-filled and happy Christmas with your loved ones.

Looking forward to seeing you all back in 2016.

Ava Ceremony

We have been learning about the Samoan Ava ceremony and some of the roles and responsibilities of members who take part in this special ceremony.

The Ava ceremony usually takes place when there is a special occasion like welcoming visitors or presenting chief titles.

In an Ava ceremony the taupou is the highest chief’s daughter and she has the special role of mixing the Ava drink in a tanoa Ava bowl using a fau strainer. She is not allowed to smile, talk or wear jewellery when she is mixing the Ava. By Jasmine

The tufaava caller is the chief who calls out who the Ava drink is to be served to. He will let the tautuava server know who to give the Ava drink to. He needs to know who to give the Ava drink to and use a special chanting voice. By Trevor

The tautuava server stands up when he is called and waits for the tufaava caller to say which chief to serve first. The highest visiting chief is always served first. When serving the highest chief the tufaava is to use two hands to hold the ipu ava cup.  By Fogavai

Yendarra meets the TALLEST athletes

Thank you to the Sky City breakers and the team for providing our school with an opportunity to participate in a kids verse breakers special event.  Our school was one of many invited to travel to the Otara Leisure Centre and then gifted resources that can be used in our school with teachers and children to sustain the love and development of basketball.

Upon arrival back to school after the event we began describing the significance of the moment using a cinquain poem to share adjectives, verbs and emotions.  These are some of our ideas written by Room 19’s authors.
